Q. What are the most current levels of arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury in the Cape Fear River across from downtown Wilmington, and how do these levels compare with EPA safe levels?

The state Division of Coastal Management stopped sampling metals in the Cape Fear River in 2007, most likely for budgetary reasons, according to an official with the Division of Water Quality.
The Lower Cape Fear River Program, part of the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources, samples the entire Cape Fear River basin, but does not sample metals at any of the monitoring stations near downtown Wilmington.
