Q. Are there laws or rules about advertising inadvertently creating excessive roadside distractions to drivers, such as people dancing around with large signs, people in costumes trying to attract your attention, etc.?
A. “Currently, there are no laws in place to regulate human billboards,” says Chris O’Keefe, Director of Planning and Inspections in New Hanover County.
He explains that while it is an issue, there aren’t any statistics that prove it causes roadside danger or more accidents on the road. If there were, or if more people in the county begin to complain, then something would be done. However, there are plenty of laws about roadside advertisement and billboards on the county’s website.
