Will there be a swimming pool in the expanded student recreation center at UNCW currently under construction?

The University of North Carolina Wilmington’s expanded student recreation center will have two swimming pools when it opens, said Tim McNeilly, director of campus recreation.

One will be an indoor recreation pool that can be used for swimming laps, intramural activities and water fitness classes, McNeilly said.

“It’s a multifunctional recreation space,” he said.

The second pool will be an outdoor leisure pool, “much like a small pool at an apartment complex,” McNeilly said. It will have outdoor seating and tables, and it’ll only be open during the warm weather months.

The student recreation center and its facilities are only open to students with a valid UNCW ID, McNeilly said.

But when students will be able to access the expansion is still up in the air. It’s set to open this fall, McNeilly said, but that date is tentative.

“The opening date has not been set yet,” he said. “We’re still in the middle of construction, and we still have to go through another hurricane season. It’s a very fluid date.”
