According to Madeline Flagler, executive director of the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History, the only beach club in that area was The Surf Club, 1 Mallard St.
Established in 1941 on the north end of Wrightsville Beach before Moore’s Inlet was closed, The Surf Club “catered to teas, luncheons and dancing for members,” Flagler said.
Hurricane Hazel hit the island in 1954. Moore’s Inlet, which had become partially filled due to shifting of sand, was fully filled in by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1965. Flagler said the push for development on the north end of Wrightsville Beach, in part, led to the closure of the inlet.
