Why was the traffic island at Carolina Beach Road and Wellington Avenue removed?

Ken Little

The full question:

“Why did the city/state go to all the trouble of time, effort and money erecting a cement traffic island at the intersection of Carolina Beach Road and Wellington Avenue and erecting three signs showing ‘No Left Turns’ only to remove the island but not the sign? In my opinion this was a great idea erecting this island to eliminate accidents and minimize waiting times for drivers who only want to turn right.”

And the answer:

The island was installed as part of the traffic improvements associated with a nearby development project, said Don Bennett, city of Wilmington traffic engineer.

“The island was not constructed according to the approved plan and had to be removed,” he said. “The signs and the turn restriction are still valid. The design and effectiveness of the island are being reviewed.”

I am so amused by this response. I sometimes use Wellington as a cut through from 17th to CB road, I have been behind many vehicles still trying to make a left turn at the new traffic island, I say trying because they all hit the cement island when they attempted the turn! Maybe they removed it because of all the complains and claims for damaged rims and tires!

Nope, that accident happened at Greenfield Lake where Carolina Beach Rd turns into 3rd St.
