Why does the city have lights over streets instead of over sidewalks?

There are two types of street lights – one is for drivers and the other is for pedestrians, said Malissa Talbert, city of Wilmington spokeswoman.

“The type of lights that extend over the streets is designed to improve safety by increasing nighttime driver visibility, which is the type of lights referenced in the inquiry,” Talbert said. “The other, more decorative, type of lighting affixed to posts along sidewalks is for pedestrian use.”

For the last several years, the city has faced budget constraints and has not had funding to increase the number of pedestrian street lights, she said.

“However, as new projects come on line, such as the North Third Street Improvement project, new lighting is included as funding allows,” Talbert said.
