Life’s a beach for dogs around Wilmington, but before you let Fido stroll the strand, know the rules for New Hanover County beaches.
At Carolina Beach, dogs are required to be on a leash at all times. They are allowed on the beach from Nov. 1 to Feb. 28. Owners must have a plastic or paper container that can be used to clean up and contain dog waste until it can be properly disposed.
At Freeman Park at Carolina Beach, dogs are required to be on a leash from April 1 through Sept. 30. From Oct. 1 through March 31, dogs are allowed off their leashes as long as the owner can maintain voice command.

At Carolina Beach State Park dogs are allowed year-round; however, they must be kept on a leash that is no longer than six feet. Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets.
At Wrightsville Beach, dogs are not allowed on the beach strand from April 1 through Sept. 30. Owners must always have pet waste disposal bags at all times. Dogs must be keep on a leash while at Wrightsville Beach. The town does have several pet waste bag stations and doggie water troughs.
In Kure Beach, you may walk leashed dogs on the strand from Oct. 1-March 31. Anyone with a dog on the beach from April 1-Sept. 30 are subject to a $25 civil citation on the first offense and a misdemeanor charge on subsequent offenses.
At Fort Fisher, dogs are allowed year-round as long as they are leashed.
