Here’s the answer from Nina Johnston, superintendent of Parks and Forestry for the city of Wilmington:
“We have been taking a look at the 40-plus dog waste stations in the city and throughout our parks locations… Those that are not being used could be removed to reduce the labor cost to maintain as well as the cost of the waste bags. This is a service that the City Parks Division supplies to citizens, but due to budget constraints we are looking at ways to reduce. This particular station (just off the Riverwalk) gets very little use in comparison to the others and we felt it could be removed on a trial basis. It was also an older model and very rusty, needing to be replaced. Cost to replace one unit is approximately $450 (plus materials and labor).
“During the next budget process if I am asked to reduce operating funds then dog waste stations may be eliminated all together.”
