Reader William asks if there was a park in town that had several jet aircraft on display back in the 1950s and ’60s.

Although we know of the military jet at the VFW Post 2573 at 2722 Carolina Beach Road, Wilmington [Map this], and the jet parked in front of Strickland’s Surplus at 5915 Carolina Beach Road, Wilmington [Map this], we couldn’t think of others.

I recall one being at greenfield lake, which I believe now resides at the vfw. And one at the New Hanover Airport.

There was one at Greenfield Lake during the 60′s along with a small zoo and some kiddie rides.

In an article dated May 20, 2010 (MyReporter). The jet at the VFW was originally displayed at Greenfield Lake and remained there until 1975. When it was no longer wanted at that location, Monty Ethridge, the VFW post commander at the time, arranged to have it moved to its current location.

Prior to its closing in 1975, the Park located near the spillway on Third Street included the Kiddie Zoo. Whether that was the official name or not, that’s what it was called. It had at least one jet airplane on display. It also had a small train that you could ride around the perimeter of the zoo. A bear, lion, monkeys, and other animals were kept there.
