The small cofferdam in use at the Battleship North Carolina is designed to move from section to section as repairs are made. Plans call for a full-ship cofferdam as a permanent fixture.
Although formal design of the whole ship “in place” hull repair project is not complete, our intention is to pump out the water for ship repairs, re-flood the cofferdam and re-float the ship, Capt. Terry Bragg said. The executive director explained “access to the ship for painting (even using modern paint technology that will cure underwater) as well as continued use of a catholic protection system is a better ‘anti-corrosion’ solution than leaving the ship dry in the cofferdam.”
