Does the fire department lease hydrants from the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority?

“No, it’s not true that the authority leases fire hydrants to the Wilmington Fire Department,” said Jacqueline Valade, Cape Fear Public Utility Authority spokeswoman.

The utility owns, operates and maintains the fire hydrants, which are part of the water distribution system.

“The fire department uses the hydrants for firefighting and testing purposes at no charge, per the Interlocal Agreement,” Valade said.
