Fortunately, an ark wasn’t needed for Hurricane Irene in August 2011. With Irene and in all cases of severe weather, the animals are taken care of, said Tregembo Animal Park co-owner Sherry Tregembo.

“The parrots and the small monkeys were put in their barns two days before the storm hit. As the storm approached, the big cats and the bears were put in their lock-down pens and the giraffe was secured in the barn,” Tregembo said.

The barn is fully enclosed and has no windows.

“We saw it coming the week before it got here,” Tregembo said of Irene. “We can put everything in if we have to.”

Hoofed animals like horses have shelters in their pens and remained outside. Horses get very nervous sealed inside a building where they can’t see what’s going on, Tregembo said.

“We’ve been through a few hurricanes, from Hazel all the way to the present,” she said. “I don’t think we’ve ever lost anything from the storms other than trees.”

Tregembo Animal Park is at 5811 Carolina Beach Road Wilmington.
