Sure, there are signs warning people not to swim in Greenfield Lake or feed the alligators.
But are there really any of the dinosaur-era reptiles in the lake plop in the middle of Wilmington?
Yep, and more than you think.
Since they are a federally and state-protected species, city officials will only remove alligators if they start coming out of the water into areas popular with people.
But Richard King, the city’s director of public services, said that only happens if the animals lose their fear of man, and that only happens if we start feeding them.
“Enjoy them in natural habitat,” he said. “But do not feed them. That’s the key.”
