The full question:

“The roundabout on Porters Neck Road has become an eyesore. The grassy center is not maintained, and two of the four directional signs have been knocked down by a vehicle plowing through, instead of around, the structure. Who’s in charge here, New Hanover County or the state? And why isn’t anything being done about this mess? “

And the answer:

The N.C. Department of Transportation is in charge of maintaining the roundabout.

A Porters Neck citizens group had volunteered to do plantings in the grassy center of the roundabout, said Tammy Stewart, a DOT spokeswoman.

“That fell through,” Stewart said.

The New Hanover County DOT maintenance division will add the roundabout to its regular maintenance schedule. Grass in the center of the roundabout will be mowed every six weeks. Because it is already summer, there will not be any planting in the center until the fall, Stewart said.

As far as directional signs that may have been knocked down, the DOT’s traffic services unit will review the damaged signs and replace them as necessary.
