How can West Brunswick coach Noble and his daughter use school facilities to give lessons?

According to Joe Noble, softball coach at West Brunswick High School, he and his daughter Amanda began giving pitching and hitting lessons at the school about three years ago. They began charging a $15 fee for the lessons to ensure attendance after no-shows became a problem. Amanda Noble starred in softball at West Brunswick and pitched for Charleston Southern University.

It isn’t an uncommon practice to use high school fields for lessons or camps for a small fee. (Football camps are co-sponsored by the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation.) In many cases, the high school fields have the best amenities and sit unused in the summer. There are eight other parks in Brunswick county which have softball fields.

There are several opportunities for youth softball in Brunswick County, including three Dixie Belle teams in Shallotte alone and a Dixie Deb team. All play games at the high school field. Several youth are volunteer coached by West Brunswick assistants, but not all.

“Everything’s legit here so I don’t have a problem,” Noble said. “We’re trying to build an organization and build programs so that the kids are all learning the same things.”
