Ballroom dancing is an activity available in Wilmington. (StarNews file photo)

Ballroom dancing is held every Thursday night at Mixto Restaurant, 5 S. Water St., Wilmington [Map this].

Babs McDance Social Dance Studio hosts the dancing, which starts at 9:30 p.m. and includes Latin dances like the salsa, meringue, bachata, cumbia and cha-cha, said Babs McCullen-Welker, dance instructor and owner of Babs McDance.

“I’m currently looking for a location for a hussle, swing and shag combination,” McCullen-Welker said. “I would like a nice restaurant to do that in.”

Space is the problem when it comes to a business dedicated solely to ballroom dancing. Ballroom dancers, said Verna Jordan, owner of Ballroom DanceSport in Kerr Station Village at 4523 Franklin Ave., Wilmington [Map this], aren’t usually big drinkers so there’s no revenue to pay for such a space.

But dances are held regularly at Ballroom DanceSport, starting at 7:15 p.m. the fourth Saturday of every month and intermittently on Tuesday night, and with lessons beginning at 8 p.m. Fridays at Babs McDance, 6782 Market St., Wilmington [Map this]. More information about these dances can be found on the studios’ websites, www.ballroomdancesportnc.com and babsmcdance.com.

Jordan said additional opportunities for ballroom dancing are available at the New Hanover County Senior Center, including an over-50s dance the first Tuesday of every month and an Azalea Coast NC USA Dance session the second Saturday of the month. USA Dance is a nonprofit organization that serves as the national governing body for DanceSport, the competitive version of ballroom dancing.
