Why not notify drivers sooner that they’ll merge left at U.S. 17 and U.S. 74/76 in Leland

The N.C. Department of Transportation reviewed the situation recently, division traffic engineer Katherine Hite said.

“There are currently two overhead signs that designate the right lane as ‘Exit Only’ to the interchange for Leland. After making a site visit to the area, it was concluded that the overhead signs were visible and should give adequate warning for the lane ending at the interchange,” Hite said.

Hite said there is not enough room on the shoulder to place ground-mounted signs, “but the department is working towards installing pavement markings in the lane to help designate an ‘Exit Only.’”

What about doing something about people coming from Isabel Holmes bridge and 421 headed south racing past people that get into the correct lane to exit to go to Leland. They speed past everyone traveling/waiting in the proper lane (right hand lane) race to where the road splits to go to Wilmington, then expect you to let them in or they crowd in on you. I have seen trucks (eighteen wheelers) have to go around them in the turn lane for the battleship to be able to proceed because they stop and block the lane until someone lets them in. Travel this way enough and you see who the habitual offenders are.
