Is DOT considering raising the speed limit on the causeway to Leland?

Q. Is the N.C. DOT considering increasing the speed limit on the causeway from the west side of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge to the Leland exit from 55 MPH to a higher limit?

A. The Department of Transportation has received a request to review the speed limit in this area, but a study has not been completed to date, said Jessi Leonard, DOT Division 3 traffic engineer, Division of Highways.

D. Allen Hancock, assistant Division 3 traffic engineer, said data is being collected to complete the study.

Average daily traffic counts, along with an “85th percentile” look — what 85 percent of motorists on that stretch of road consider a reasonable speed based on vehicle radar pacing and other methods — are still being collected.

That information should be collected within the next few weeks, Hancock said.

A decision will be made from there.
