Q. I recently went to the newly constructed Port City Marina downtown and they do not have wheelchair accessibility to their portable restroom trailers, which include showers and toilets. Is it not required by law? Why would the city allow them to open in 2015 if they were not providing handicap accessibility?
A. According to city officials, the restrooms inside Pier 33 (where only the restaurant and bar Blackfinn Ameripub is now open) have handicap-accessible bathrooms that are open to the public, but do not offer showers.
Port City Marina does have mobile trailer unit bathrooms that are handicap accessible, but the marina is waiting for final approval from local officials to open them to the public, according to marina owner Chuck Schoninger. In the future, the marina will have a permanent shower facility located inside a nearby apartment complex that is set to break ground.
