Q. Is it legal for partyers on Palm Tree Island near Lee’s Cut to play obscene (filthy lyrics) rap music very loud all day? Why don’t the Wildlife Officers or Sherriff’s deputies issue them tickets for noise disturbance?
A. Rather than taking legal action on the first offense, officers try to educate people on Palm Tree Island before issuing any tickets, according to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer.
“We have gotten noise complaints on that island. We’ve gone over there and people have complied to turn the music down. When it continues and becomes a problem, that’s when we’ll issue citations,” Brewer said.
As for whether or not it is legal, Brewer said there is “probably no criminal charge since people can argue free speech.”
