In Wilmington, it is not a code violation to have an automobile parked on private property without a current tag, although it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle on public streets without current tags.
In New Hanover County, you can keep one inoperative vehicle in your backyard.
You can do any repairs on a car in your yard you want as long as it does not create any environmental or safety hazards. You can work on a car in your yard, but you cannot do it for pay or for services. For example, you can work on a friend or family member’s car, but you cannot accept any money or services for your work.
