Q. Why do so many of the roads in Brunswick County include ordinal directions in their name? Many of the state roads are identified with NW, NE, SW, and SE (ex. Whiteville Rd NE, River Rd SE, Stone Chimney Rd SW). I don’t see this as much elsewhere in the state.
A. Brunswick County roads include ordinal directions because the county is split into quadrants, according to Steve Stone, deputy county manager. The county splits into quadrants at the intersection of N.C. 211 and U.S. 17, anything north and east of the intersection would have a NE tag, the next quadrant down would have a SE tag, then the next quadrant SW and the next NW. Stone said the system was established when the county moved to digital mapping.
