How much did Gatorade pay New Hanover County Schools to film a commercial at Laney High School?

Cammie Bellamy

Gatorade did not pay the district any money to film a commercial at Laney High School with alumnus Michael Jordan.

The NBA Hall-of-Famer visited his alma mater May 2 to shoot a portion of the commercial. A post on the school’s Twitter page showed him posing with Laney Assistant Principal Aaron Livengood, Principal Sharon Dousharm and Athletic Director Fred Lynch.

“The school did not receive any compensation from Gatorade for allowing them to film the commercial last week,” schools spokesman Valita Quattlebaum wrote in an email.

Jordan graduated from Laney in 1981 before winning a national championship as a freshman at the University of North Carolina and six with the Chicago Bulls between 1984 and 2003. Jordan is now the principal owner and chairman of the Charlotte Hornets.
