What work are they doing at Independence Boulevard and Wrightsville Avenue?

Q. At Independence Boulevard at Wrightsville Avenue, it seems each night or so they are drilling into the edge of the road. Sometimes it looks like they are pumping steam into the ground. I notice that there are definite holes along the edge of the road. What project are they doing?

A. The N.C. Department of Transportation is making repairs to the underground storm water system section of Independence Boulevard (also known as SR 1209) between Wrightsville Avenue and Park Avenue, said Gerard M. Taylor, assistant division maintenance engineer for the DOT’s Division of Highways.

“Along this section of roadway settlement was observed. An investigation was conducted,” Taylor said.

The following corrective actions are underway:

  • The installation of a pipe liner to inhibit water and soil infiltration.
  • Adding pump grout along the pipeline in order to fill voids and stabilize the pipe and roadway.
  • Replacing the expressway curb as required.
  • Road milling and paving as required.

The estimated cost of the work is $365,000, Taylor said.
