You’ve managed to stump quite a few people!
In short, nobody seems to know why, at least not for sure. The New Hanover County planning department didn’t know, so we turned to Joe Shephard, a staff member of the North Carolina room of the New Hanover County library system.
He said the road was known as Cherry Road on a 1939 map. But by the time a map was drawn in 1967, it was known as Chair Road.
Shephard said plenty of speculation holds that the name “had to do with a chair builder out there. But I think that’s just baloney.”
So, in short, it is Chair Road, but why? Even sitting down to try to figure it out doesn’t get you a solid answer on four sturdy legs.
