Julia Phelps, an injury prevention health educator and the Safe Kids Cape Fear coordinator at the New Hanover County Health Department, said modifying a car in this way is not something she would recommend.
“If a modification like that is done to the vehicle by the person that owns the vehicle, that is not a seating position that will have been crash tested or anything like that. That would be something that if they were really wanting to do, I would have them consult the vehicle manufacturer to see if that is something they allow or an option they have for their vehicles specifically. That would be the only way I would say that would be OK to do.”
