Are there any Wilmington or New Hanover County restrictions on short-term rentals? What are the best options for residents to rent out their houses for the 2017 Wells Fargo PGA event?

Ashley Morris

As of now, no city or county restrictions block residents from renting out their homes for the 2017 Wells Fargo Championship to be held May 1-7 at Eagle Point Golf Club.

But residents should check with their homeowner’s associations and check neighborhood bylaws to make sure their individual community has no restrictions on renting.

Before renting out their homes, residents in New Hanover County should also be aware of the occupancy tax. If residents use services like AirBNB, the tax is automatically deducted. But for those advertising their listing on their own, Lisa Wurtzbacher, finance director for New Hanover County, said they should fill out a county form. The forms let the county know why renters are opening up their home and help them submit accurate occupancy taxes.

The most popular options online for renting out your home for a single week or weekend include sites like AirBNB, VRBO and HomeAway. Residents can also contact local beach home rental agencies for information.
