Q: Does the fountain located at the northern end of N. Lumina Ave in Wrightsville Beach serve a purpose other than for appearance? The fountain seems to run intermittently and often overflows into the grass and eventually the street. I was curious if this serves a purpose other than for looks. Since it overflows and doesn’t seem to recirculate I was thinking it may flush out the end of the water line or maybe provides drinking water for the birds in the area.

A: Yes, the fountain, which is similar to an irrigation head, does serve a very important purpose says Wrightsville Beach town manager, Tim Owens. It’s there to ensure better water quality on that end of the island where many residents do not stay year round.

“There are some larger, dead end water lines at the north end of the island. There is also limited use which becomes more prevalent in the fall and winter. The flushing keeps the water moving and improves the water quality,” saidOwens.

A second fountain is located near the Wrightsville Beach public works building, says Owens. Neither are there for appearances, but rather (as you suggested) for flushing out water or water turnover to keep water quality up.
