Why does my iPhone call it Murraysville? Everyone around here calls it Murrayville.

Q. The Weather Channel; channels 10, 7 and 14; and iPhones report and show an area on the map as Murraysville. There is no area off NC 132 called Murraysville. We live off Murrayville Road.

A. Maps can be confounding documents. The scale might be off, distances erroneously represented, entire swaths of geography rubbed out.

Fortunately, the U.S. Geological Survey maintains precise topographical maps of the entire country at www.NationalMap.gov to make sure we never have to wonder about where, exactly, we’re standing. But that doesn’t mean the document is beholden to local customs or traditions.

The part of Wilmington most locals know as Murrayville around the intersection of North College Road and Murrayville Road, and, incidentally, home to Murrayville Elementary School, is known to government officials by a different name.

Murraysville (note the addition of an S) is an official U.S. Census Bureau census-designated space (CDS) comprising 11.5 square miles in the area generally referred to as Murrayville.

And while few of the 7,279 people in 2,896 households that call the area home might call it by the government’s preferred name, that’s what goes on the meteorological maps used by many regional and national media outlets.
