Jim Leutze is probably best known as the former chancellor of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He oversaw the university during a time when the institution grew in numbers and prestige and earned a positive reputation in the community for civic leadership. He stepped down from the position in 2003 after 13 years on the job. After retiring, Leutze entered the political realm by running for N.C. Senate District 9. Thom Goolsby, the Republican candidate and an attorney, defeated Leutze in 2010. Gov. Mike Easley appointed him to the board of the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission in 2005. History and coastal issues are among Leutze’s passions. He’s made environmental documentaries, including one on the Cape Fear River, and is also author of a biography about naval commander Adm. Thomas C. Hart.

Thanks to the NAACP we sons of NC have an independent and capable governor-elect. Dr. Leutze possesses a mind and skills which we pray our state will call upon in the next few years.
