Seismic testing will not be happening off Carolina Beach any time soon, if it happens at all. This month the U.S. Department of the Interior announced the federal government has killed plans to drill for oil and natural gas off the Atlantic Coast; seismic testing will no longer be necessary.
What residents have likely heard is work on a beach nourishment project that started in January. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and contractors are dredging sand from the ocean floor and pumping it onto Carolina Beach and Kure Beach to combat erosion. That project is scheduled to end April 30.
