Why is the Smithfields on South 17th Street being torn down?

Smithfield’s Chicken N’ Bar-B-Q operates at three addresses in the Cape Fear region. The restaurant at 3705 Patriot Way in Wilmington, visible from South 17th Street, is undergoing significant renovation with a projected opening this summer. In the meantime, fans of their barbecue can satisfy those cravings by dining at the other two properties located at 7300 Market St. in Ogden and 2020 Olde Regent Way in Leland.

Their franchise requires a scrape and rebuild every 10 years, the market street location will go down, after the 17th st ext. is reopened
