Can I hunt from a canoe along the entire Cape Fear River, or only when it passes through game lands?

Ken Little

“There is no simple answer to that question,” said Lt. Sam Craft, of the

N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.

“You can hunt from a canoe as long as it is not in motion from machine

propulsion,” Craft said. “The Cape Fear River runs through several counties,

all of which will have different local laws.”

Craft said that some game lands require permits and are only open on

certain days of the week.

The Landowner Protection Act applies to all lands except game lands.

“Finally, it is unlawful to trespass upon the lands of another for the

purposes of hunting,” Craft said. “You shouldn’t attempt to harvest an

animal on property you do not have permission to hunt.”
