Q. A reader asked on June 3: What has caused the repaving of Market Street in front of the new Walmart up near Porters Neck to be stalled? We have had enough aggravation and have not seen any progress in almost four weeks.
A. The contractor has been working at night “in order to lessen the impact to the traveling public,” said Brian S. Rick, communications officer for the N.C. Department of Transportation.
Rick provided a partial list of the work being done on the project:
- Milling 1½-inch the entire length and width of the road. Milling the road was necessary due to the poor condition of the existing surface
- Marsh Oaks and Mendenhall Drive: The entire pavement structure of Mendenhall Drive in Marsh Oaks had to be replaced because of existing inadequate pavement structure.
- Northbound Market Street: The right turn lane from sewer lift station to La Costa Mexican Restaurant had to be replaced because of inadequate pavement structure.
- Southbound Market Street: The right turn lane into Medac Urgent Care had to be replaced because of inadequate pavement structure.
- Repairing asphalt.
- Restoring road sections at various northbound and southbound locations, using 140 tons of asphalt.
- Placing final asphalt surface course on the inside southbound lane, both northbound lanes and the Porter Neck intersection, using 2,950 tons of asphalt.
Ricks said the Market Street project was delayed due to unforeseen utility conflicts. The project should finished by July 1.
