Q. How much money has been raised for the repair of the Battleship’s hull and to build the coffer dam around the ship so it can be properly maintained for years to come?

A. As of June 1, donors have given $10.9 million to support hull repairs at the Battleship North Carolina, including $3.5 million from the state. In total, the repairs and construction of a coffer dam around the base of the ship will cost $13.5 million.

The battleship is under an emergency repair notice from the state because of corrosion around the hull. To perform the necessary repairs and make future repairs easier, officials plan to build a coffer dam: a permanent structure that will allow crews to drain water around the ship and better access the hull.

Several corporate and nonprofit donors have given to the campaign, including the State Employees Credit Union, which chipped in $3 million for a veterans’ memorial walkway on top of the dam. In April, officials invited citizens to donate to the Generations Campaign, reminiscent of the “Save Our Ship” campaign of the 1960s, during which North Carolina schoolchildren donated nickels and dimes to bring the battleship to Wilmington.

“We’re not ending this until we have the money we need to repair the battleship,” Battleship Director Capt. Terry Bragg said.

Citizens have several ways to donate to the Generations Campaign:

  • Text “Battleship” to 41444
  • Visit www.BattleshipNC.com and click the donate button
  • Mail a check made out to “Friends of the Battleship North Carolina” (note on the memo line “Generations Campaign”) to P.O. Box 480, Wilmington, N.C., 28402
  • Visit the battleship for an on-site donation.
