Did Carolina Beach pay town employees to attend a picnic?

Did the town of Carolina Beach pay its employees a full day’s pay to attend a half-day picnic?

A. The town typically holds two annual employee appreciation events – one in the spring and a second in December before Christmas.

On May 15, the town held its spring employee event at Mike Chappell Park, said Town Manager Michael Cramer. All employees were invited to the Friday afternoon picnic, which started at noon and ended at 2 p.m.

Employees working a scheduled shift who attended the picnic during their shift were paid, Cramer said. Any employees not working a scheduled shift, such as an off-duty firefighter or police officer, did not get paid if they attended the picnic.

Cramer said the picnic is funded by the town’s overall budget for employee appreciation and retention. He did not have the exact numbers, but guessed the picnic cost around $2,000.

The town has 103 full-time employees, Cramer said. In the summer, the number swells to around 160, including part-time positions such as lifeguards and maintenance workers.
