Can a Pender resident avoid paying to use the county’s trash drop-off sites?

Q. Is there a residential waste drop off location in Pender County instead of using the collection services? Can you opt out of the county’s solid waste collection effort? If so, where can you take the garbage?

A. According to Michael Mack, director of public works, Pender County does not have its own landfill, and thus residents cannot simply take household waste there without paying a fee.

“They would have to take it to Sampson County,” where Pender sends its trash, Mack said.

The county has 12 convenience sites and a transfer station, and residents pay a fee to use the sites for trash disposal. Opting out is possible, Mack supposed, by simply not paying the fee, billed and collected by the tax assessor’s office.

But he doubted the economic feasibility of taking the trash to Sampson County, then paying its fee. A resident would not be allowed to use the sites without a car sticker indicating that the fee had been paid.

Pender County, Mack went on to say, does not use collection services; residents take trash to the convenience sites or transfer station. Trash is picked up by various entities in the incorporated towns, and questions about those services should be directed to the appropriate municipal government.
