Q. I have a lot of winter grass and weeds coming up in my Bermuda grass. Can I over-spray with Roundup to kill them without killing the dormant Bermuda grass?
A. Marie Warren with the Master Gardeners at the New Hanover County Cooperative Extension and Arboretum says, “if you spray Round Up on weeds, it kills everything, including the grass! If you spray that now, you will have dead spots in your grass in spring.”
Warren recommends a broad-leaf herbicide and says “the best thing to do is look on the side of the herbicide to see if says it’s safe to use on a particular grass.”
Warren says the chemicals Atrazine and Simazine are best for winter weeds. She also recommends in mid-February through mid-March applying a pre-emergent herbicide to cut down on summer weeds and choosing an herbicide that contains 2 or 3 different herbicides as no one herbicide will kill every type of weed.
