Can an expired drivers license be used as a valid form of identification in North Carolina?

According to the chief counsel of the N.C. Beverage Control Commission, nothing prohibits someone from using an expired license to verify age.

“If the drivers’ license is expired, but in all other ways perfectly describes the person presenting it (and shows they are over 21), I cannot see a judge convicting anyone. If the person just glances at the expired license and does not verify that the person is truly one and the same as that on the license, (and the person is under 21 using a brother’s license), any defense would be incredibly weak,” said N.C. ABC Commision Legal Division Director K. Renee Cowick.
