Q. I am very pleased that the southern leg of the I-140 bypass from U.S. 74-76 to U.S. 17 has finally been completed. However, my concern is regarding the signage heading east on U.S. 74176. There is a sign on the right shoulder indicating that the entrance to the bypass to 17 south is one-quarter mile away. The problem is that the sign is almost at the same location as the beginning of the left hand merge lane that takes you to the bypass. There is apparently a left turn allowed at the intersection of U.S. 74/76 and the entrance lane. This means that vehicles can enter the bypass either on the left merge lane or directly from U.S. 74-76, which seems extremely dangerous. What is going on? Will new signage be put in place.

A. The N.C. Department of Transportation looked into the reader question and some changes will be made, said. George D. Eckart, Division 3 assistant division traffic engineer.

At the intersection, signalization was not part of the original design, he said.

“The change to a signalized intersection, along with the grass median between the U.S. 74/76 through lanes and the N.C. 140 left-turn lane make some of the existing signs confusing, as the reader notes,” Eckart said.

The N.C. DOT will work with the contractor “to modify the existing signs to provide more advance notice of the N.C. 140 intersection and reduce the possibility of a motorist making a left turn at the intersection from the through lanes,” Eckart said in December.
