Q. Where is UNCW planning on having games for the new beach volleyball program? Any chance of games being played at an actual beach?
A. The University of North Carolina Wilmington hasn’t finalized plans for where it will play beach volleyball next spring, but the new team will likely use one or both of the capable private facilities in Wilmington, according to athletic director Jimmy Bass.
Bass said the team, at least initially, won’t be able to play on campus. Discussions so far haven’t included any talk of actually playing matches beachside.
Capt’n Bill’s Backyard Grill on Market Street and Courts & Sports Bar & Grill on Lancelot Lane are the two venues with current setups to meet UNCW’s needs. College dual meets consist of five doubles matches played to best-of-three sets.
“We’re still working on those (schedule) details,” Bass said. “We’re just beginning that process right now.”
Bass said when the team was announced in December that hosting off-campus meets and/or tournaments through such a partnership would help the new team generate revenue.
