Q. They appear to be clearing the land behind the zoo on Carolina Beach Road. Is there a new housing development planned for this area?
A. In August 2009, the New Hanover County Technical Review Committee preliminarily approved a site plan known as Heglar Commons for a total of 190 rental units with a host of conditions attached to the project, said Sam Burgess, the county’s senior planner.
A portion of the property abuts the Tregembo Animal Park off Carolina Beach Road and is north of Battle Park subdivision.
“The 190-unit project was valid as a preliminary site plan until Dec. 31, 2013. A formal preliminary site plan extension request was made in late October 2013 for the same number of units,” Burgess said. “The request was suddenly withdrawn and never made it to the TRC for review.”
The petitioner indicated last year that a new purchaser intended to submit a revised project on the same property.
Since March 2014, the planning office “has not received any formal preliminary submission of a new or revised plan,” Burgess said.
“However, our office has talked with at least one local prominent developer about his interest in the property, but no formal submission has been received,” he said.

Any updates on this area being developed….they continue to work back there?
There is a second edition to Tarin Woods that is to be developed in the area behind the zoo. At current there are around 50-60 homesites that are proposed. These ‘proposed’ homes are to be developed on smaller lots than the current Tarin Woods neighborhood and will moreso appear as patio and towne homes.
