What is being built in Hampstead near the site of Eastern Outfitters?

Bill Walsh
StarNews

According to Pender County Director of Planning Kyle Breuer, the site is being prepared for an unmanned electrical substation owned by Duke Energy Progress.

The Pender Board of County Commissioners approved a special-use permit for the construction last summer, and according to submitted documents at that time, the operation will occupy approximately 2.1 acres and will be built in two phases, the first involving the control building and one transformer. Phase 2 will see the construction of another transformer and connecting power poles. The site will be enclosed by a 7-foot fence, and road frontage will be buffered by vegetation.

The site will be accessed from Old Whitfield Road.
