Q. With all the current construction on the Leland causeway, why are so many overhead streetlamps on the approaches not working?
THIS JAN. 12 ANSWER WAS UPDATED WITH ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON JAN. 13.
A. A contract with the N.C. Department of Transportation includes removing the existing lighting system and replacing with a new lighting and control system.
“We will be using temporary lighting to light the work area when we are working at night for the construction of the causeway. No temporary lighting will be provided for the entire (construction) time,” said Wanda James, assistant resident engineer for DOT Division 3.
Lighting will only be provided “during the time the crews are actually working,” James said.
Existing lighting will remain in place as long as it does not interfere if the construction of the new lighting. The maintenance of the existing system is the responsibility of DOT Traffic Services.
Questions about the maintenance of the existing lighting system along the causeway section of U.S. 17-74-76 can be directed to Deputy Division Traffic Engineer Jessi Booker at email@example.com.
The DOT phone number for information is (910) 341-0900.
The causeway is scheduled to be complete November 2016.
