Q. What do the approximately one-inch green disks mean when they are applied — sometimes once, sometimes twice — to lampposts, trees and/or posts in certain areas of the town (certainly in the Forest Hills and Metts Avenue areas).
A. We initially had a hard time finding out.
A spokesman for Duke Energy Progress said they didn’t do it, and AT&T said it wasn’t in the green sticker business.
Eventually, prompted by a comment from the original questioner, we found out.
To paraphrase Walt Kelly, creator of the immortal comic strip “Pogo,” “We have met the culprit and he is us.”
Unbeknownst to newsroom staffers and most of the general public, the StarNews places those stickers to guide our carriers as they make their early morning rounds.
