Q. Why is there a fire hydrant spewing water into Smith Creek daily on Control Tower Road? It gets turned on sometime before noon and off before the days’ end. Hard to miss if traveling south on North Kerr Avenue.
A. This location is a daily flusher that goes off daily and has done so for about five years, Mike McGill, spokesman for Cape Fear Public Utility Authority, wrote in an email.
“The location is a dead end for the Sweeney system,” McGill wrote. “If we were to stop flushing, the chlorine residual would die out and we would have significant water quality issues in the area.”
CFPUA monitors flushing to minimize its impact on an area.
