Are traffic lights at Lake and Wrightsville avenues and S. College broken?

Q. On my way to work at 4:30 a.m. on South College Road, why do the traffic lights at Lake Avenue and Wrightsville Avenue turn red with no cross traffic setting them off? The light at Lake Avenue turns red every 15 seconds.

A. The sensors for the crossing streets (Lake and Wrightsville) were damaged during resurfacing work, said Donald Bennett, Wilmington city traffic engineer.

“NCDOT has a contractor on the project that will be restoring the detection under that contract,” Bennett said.

“We request that all suspected signal malfunctions be reported to 911,” Bennett added.
