Q. Can I pull two trailers at the same time? I need to pull a 25-foot gooseneck and a small pop-up camper behind it.
A. According to State Highway Patrol Lt. Jeff Gordon, “It is against North Carolina state law to tow the vehicles described.”
Gordon directs motorists to N.C. General Statute 20-116 that addresses such a question.
Under 20-116, “a single vehicle having two or more axles shall not exceed 40 feet in length overall of dimensions inclusive of front and rear bumpers.”
The other portion of the law that seems pertinent to this question is, “no combination of vehicles coupled together shall consist of more than two units and no such combination of vehicles shall exceed a total length of 60 feet inclusive of front and rear bumpers.”
A towing vehicle would be counted as one unit and the item being towed is the second unit. Some commercial vehicles are excluded from the length limits as are vehicles carrying poles, pipe, machinery or other such objects during daylight hours, or material being transported day or night for emergency repair of public services.
