Q. Can you find out and report on the status of Lincoln Forest storm drainage? There are open ditches that allow mosquitoes to develop. There is a large canal right through the middle of the development. These ditches are a health and safety hazard. This area has been in the city for about 50 years and still lacks this service.

A. An open drainage channel does run through the middle of the Wilmington neighborhood, said Dave Mayes, the city’s stormwater manager.

Although there are no plans to convert the channel to a closed pipe system, the city does have a future project that will stabilize the channel. Mayes said there is some slumping of the banks of a channel that is an offshoot to the main channel. Stabilizing that channel should improve drainage in the area, he said.

Mayes said a lot of areas across the city have open drainage systems.

“To say it lacks that service is not true,” Mayes said. He pointed to Burnt Mill Creek, which has a 35-acre open pond off Randall Parkway that was built in the 1980s, and an open channel through Pine Valley. Downtown, on the other hand, is all piped.

An open drainage system can hold more volume and can benefit water quality, although homeowners don’t always embrace them.

“Pipes are aesthetically the preferred choice of a homeowner,” Mayes said.

Marie Hemmen, New Hanover County’s vector control manager, said that area of the city was recently sprayed for mosquitos. They spray based on trap data and complaints. They also spray based on landing counts – a technician stands in an area and counts how many mosquitos land on them.

If water is flowing, it typically doesn’t breed mosquitoes, Hemmen said. Fish and tadpoles also eat mosquito larva, she said.

“That’s not to say there aren’t some here and there,” she added.
