Q. Do you have any info on the home at the north end of Lea-Hutaff Island? Is it still there? Is it liveable or occupied? Does it have utilities?

A. The house at the north end of Lea-Hutaff Island belongs to a Greensboro family, and is the only home standing on the barrier island, much of which is now in conservation easements held by the National Audubon Society and the North Carolina Land Trust.

“It has been there since about 1990,” according to Walker Golder, who works for the Audubon Society. “It is one of three houses that had been on Lea Island, and it is the only one still standing.”

Golder was not sure of the present condition of the house.

“It was used very often for a while,” he said, “but the last time I saw it, the stairs had washed away. I do not know if the family is still using it,” though, he added, family members were very fond of the place and protective of it.

To the best of his knowledge, it is not connected to any public utilities.
